You know you’re in the country when……

You know you’re in the country when you wake up to the sound of a rooster.

Balinese rooster - you can tell it's not here. We don't have enough rain for this lush, tropical undergrowth!!

(I’m going to make Friday a day for posting a little story which I feel related to living specifically in rural Australia. It will be my “You know you’re in the country when…… ” postings!! Hope you enjoy them.)

As roosters are banned in the urban areas in Australia you don’t hear rooster very often. In Bali where cock fighting is very much part of the culture (it is hideous – almost as bad as bull fighting), you get woken up by dozens and dozens of roosters. It’s quite annoying to start with but you get used to it and enjoy the noise competition between the cocks.

I’m glad our rooster is not too close though as 4.30am is not my chosen wakeup time!!
